Verkade: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Innovation
On May 2, 1886, Ericus Gerhardus Verkade opened his Steam Bread and Cracker Factory 'De Ruyter' in a former patent oil factory along the Zaan River. What started as a modest venture for bread and crackers quickly grew into a remarkable success story, with Verkade regularly adding new products to his range.
Born in 1835 as the son of a notary in Vlaardingen, Ericus moved back to the Zaanstreek region with his mother after his father's death. He was sent to a boarding school and became acquainted with the industrial history of the area, which flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries but faced outdated technologies in the 19th century.
The breakthrough came with the Canal Act of 1863, which granted the Zaandam harbour access to the sea and established a direct railway connection to Amsterdam and the rest of the country. During this period, Ericus decided to start his own business. After a fire in his first factory, which was a patent oil factory, he began trading in oil-bearing grains. Despite being a manufacturer at heart, he chose to establish a bread factory without any experience as a baker, in order to meet the demand for large-scale bread production in rural areas.
On May 2, 1886, Verkade opened his bakery 'De Ruyter' on a 1342 m² site along the Zaan River. A steam engine was installed to power the various machines. In addition to bread, the factory also began producing crackers, utilizing the heat from the ovens efficiently after baking bread.
In 1950, Verkade was awarded the prestigious title of 'Royal', recognizing its contribution to craftsmanship and innovation.
Verkade's story is a testament to craftsmanship and progressiveness, with the brand becoming synonymous with quality and taste. Discover the rich history of Verkade and enjoy the delicious products that have been beloved for generations.
