Douwe Egberts (or DE) is a Dutch company that has been processing and trading coffee, tea, and other provisions since 1753. It all began when Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thysses moved from their birthplace of Idskenhuizen to the nearby town of Joure in 1753. On March 11 of that year, they opened a "shop in colonial goods." In their store, they sold various products that contributed to everyday enjoyment, including groceries, chocolate, and dried fruits.
In 1780, Egbert Douwes and Akke Thysses handed over the business to their son Douwe Egberts (1755-1806) and his wife Ymke Jacobs Visser. The company, which still bears the name Douwe Egberts, focused on the processing and blending of coffee, tea, and tobacco.
Under the leadership of Douwe Egberts, the company expanded beyond the borders of Joure. Not only did he lend his name to the company, but he also became the driving force behind its expansion. After Douwe Egberts passed away in 1806, the business was continued by his second wife, Lysbeth Mintjes.
Douwe Egberts also contributed to the establishment of the Haulsterbossen forest.
After World War II, Douwe Egberts embarked on international expansion by opening branches in France, Spain, and Denmark. Belgium was added to the list of countries where the company was active starting in 1948.
