The Memphis Group, founded by Ettore Sottsass in the years 1981-1987, was a groundbreaking collective of interior designers who rebelled against the rigid functional rules of modernism. Their ideas had a profound influence on the aesthetics of the 1980s. The style of the Memphis Group is associated with postmodernism and drew inspiration from pop art and art deco.

The name "Memphis" was derived from a Bob Dylan song called "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again." As this song played on the record player one autumn evening in 1981, the plans for the new venture took shape. The name was later considered fitting as it referred to the ancient capital of Egypt and to the place where Elvis Presley died.

The Memphis Group challenged mainstream designs with their innovative approach. They combined geometric shapes, vibrant colours, and diverse patterns in seemingly illogical ways. This gave rise to products like the Casablanca and Carlton cabinets. The design of the Carlton cabinet symbolizes the mindset of the "Memphis Group." This colourful bookcase with open and angled sections, some drawers, and a solid base takes the form of a classic bedside table that fans out like a tree and ends in a cubist crown. It appears more like a sculpture than a functional storage piece for books.

Annually, the group presented their designs at the Salone del Mobile, the design fair in Milan, where they garnered much admiration. Despite underwhelming sales figures, only one design, Michele de Lucchi's First Chair from 1983, went into mass production. While Memphis Group furniture didn't see widespread use in homes, the movement had a significant impact on television sets, music videos, and the aesthetics of MTV, which was established around the same time. David Bowie and Karl Lagerfeld were avid collectors of Memphis Group pieces, and furniture from the group can be seen in films such as "Ruthless People" and "Back to the Future Part II."

In 1987, Ettore Sottsass left the group, and soon after, the collective disbanded.
