The Story Behind Verkade Biscuits and the Enchantment of Libelle Magazine
Did you know that a roll of Verkade biscuits (rusk) contains exactly thirteen pieces? A peculiar number, isn't it? But here's why: in the past, crates containing one hundred pieces were used for individual sales. When Verkade decided to switch to roll packaging, they wanted to preserve the old crates. Exactly eight rolls, each with thirteen crackers, fit perfectly into such a crate. The competition soon followed the same number, and thus, thirteen became the magical quantity we know today.
Back in the 1960s, there was a shortage of labour, and companies struggled to attract employees. At Verkade, they wanted to retain an employee working in the cracker factory. They asked him why he wanted to leave. His answer was remarkable: his stomach couldn't handle all the food. It turned out his colleagues had fooled him into believing that it was Verkade's policy to ensure quality by inspecting, or rather, eating every hundredth cracker. Relieved of this duty, the man remained happily employed at Verkade.
Now, let's take a closer look at Libelle, the well-known Dutch-language women's magazine. It was first printed on April 13, 1934, by NV Uitgeverij and is currently published by DPG Media Magazines. In addition to the Dutch version, there is also a Flemish Libelle, published by Roularta, which is completely autonomous and different from the Dutch variant.
The name "Libelle" comes from the Latin word "libellus," meaning "booklet" or "writing," derived from "liber" (book). In Middle Dutch, a "libel" or "libelle" referred to a "small writing" or "pamphlet."
Until the 1950s and 1960s, Libelle primarily focused on fashion, recipes, and serialized stories. In the 1970s, the magazine evolved into a more versatile women's magazine. It now offers information on household matters, psychology, and society, and features inspiring stories.
A well-known contributor to the magazine was Miep Racké-Noordijk, also known as Scheherazade, with her iconic Libelle cocktail. Additionally, the comic strip "Jack, Jacky and the Juniors" by Jan Kruis is a beloved part of the magazine.
As you can see, both Verkade Biscuits and Libelle have a rich history and continue to hold a special place in the hearts of many people to this day.
