Douwe Egberts (DE) is a Dutch company founded in 1753. It started as a "grocery store in colonial goods" in Joure and grew into a processor and trader of coffee, tea, and other food products. Douwe Egberts became known for its processing and blending of coffee, tea, and tobacco.
The business was passed on to Douwe Egberts' son and his wife, Ymke Jacobs Visser, in 1780. Under his leadership, the company expanded beyond Joure, making him both the namesake and founder of the expansion. After Douwe Egberts' death in 1806, his second wife, Lysbeth Mintjes, continued running the business.
Douwe Egberts also contributed to the planting of the Haulsterbossen forest. After World War II, the company embarked on international expansion, establishing branches in France, Spain, Denmark, and Belgium starting from 1948.
