Van Nelle: A Rotterdam Pioneer in Coffee, Tea, and Tobacco

In the year 1782, Johannes van Nelle and his wife Hendrica opened a modest shop at Leuvehaven in Rotterdam, where they sold coffee, tea, and tobacco. After Johannes passed away in 1811, his brave widow continued to run the business. Unfortunately, her life also came to an end in 1813. Fortunately, Johannes van Nelle Jr., her son, and his brother-in-law Abraham Goedkoop took over the enterprise, which they continued under the name "De Erven de Wed. J. van Nelle" (The Heirs of the Late J. van Nelle). In 1837, the Van der Leeuw family became co-owners of the company after the death of Johannes van Nelle Jr. From that moment on, Van Nelle was fully owned by the Van der Leeuw family.

Under the leadership of Jacobus Johannes van der Leeuw, the company steadily grew between 1837 and 1881. He established global trade contacts, started his own plantations in the Dutch East Indies, and transformed the original shop into a coffee roastery and tobacco and tea processing facility. As the century progressed, coffee and tea took on an increasingly prominent role within Van Nelle, making the company prosperous.

What truly set Van Nelle apart was their unique approach, with memorable advertising figures such as Piggelmee. The period around World War II was challenging for Van Nelle, but from the 1950s onwards, under the leadership of director J.P. Coelingh, the company made a comeback.

An important milestone that contributed to this was the introduction of Supra in 1962, the very first freshly ground vacuum-packed coffee. This revolutionized the coffee industry and greatly contributed to the success of Van Nelle.
