High Vintage 1kg Net Cocoa Tin by the Droste's Cocoa & Chocolate Factories N.V. with Nurse

  • Manufacturer: Droste's Cocoa & Chocolate Factories N.V.
  • Production Date: 1950 - 1970

Description
The high vintage cocoa tin from Droste's Cocoa & Chocolate Factories N.V., weighing 1 kilogram net, is a beloved collectable among enthusiasts of nostalgic chocolate packaging. This square tin, manufactured between 1950 and 1970, is adorned with an image of a nurse, which has become an iconic symbol for the Droste brand.

The Droste cocoa tin is made by Droste's Cocoa & Chocolate Factories N.V., a well-known Dutch manufacturer of chocolate and cocoa. The tin is of high quality and features a hinged lid. With dimensions of 19.7 cm in height, 11 cm in length, and 11 cm in width, the tin was suitable for 1 kilogram of cocoa.

The most striking feature of the cocoa tin is the image of the nurse. This image is characterized by the famous "Droste effect," where an image is endlessly repeated on a smaller scale. The nurse is depicted on two sides of the tin, against a red background. She wears a black-and-white uniform and holds a tray with a cup and the cocoa tin on it, with the same scene repeated over and over.

The left side of the tin displays the royal coat of arms, indicating that Droste is a "purveyor to the royal household." On a light blue background, the text reads: "Droste Cacao N.V. Droste cocoa & chocolate factories. Haarlem Holland." The right side of the tin showcases medals, the national coat of arms under a canopy, and the text: "Hamburg 1898. The Hague 1898 - Brussels 1904. Antwerp 1904. Grand Prix."

The design of the cocoa tin was created by Jan Misset. The tin's lid features a long hinge.

Condition This Droste cocoa tin is in good vintage condition, with normal signs of use and age-related wear. Any damages can be clearly identified through the accompanying photos.

Droste B.V. Vaassen, formerly known as Droste, is a Dutch chocolate manufacturer founded in Haarlem in 1890. The company still produces the popular Droste pastilles and chocolate letters.

Originally a family business, Droste has been acquired multiple times and has been a standalone business unit within the German company Hosta since 1997. The original Droste roasting plant remained operational until 2004 as part of Dutch Cacao BV, which had been producing Blooker cocoa since 1986. However, production was moved to a new factory in Amsterdam that year. Droste chocolate has been produced in Vaassen since 1986, and its products are sold in more than seventy countries, with over 65% of revenue coming from abroad.

The name Droste originates from Gerardus Johannes Droste, a pastry and biscuit baker from Haarlem. Starting in 1863, he sold round, flat chocolate pastilles called "Pastilles Droste" in his shop on Verwulft in Haarlem (now occupied by a McDonald's branch). In 1890, he opened a factory in the same city.

Droste is not only known for the chocolate sold under its name but also for the Droste effect. This refers to the phenomenon of an image repeating itself in a progressively smaller format. The Droste effect is named after the image on the packaging of Droste chocolate, which has been used since around 1900.

On the packaging, a nurse is depicted holding a similar package. The presumed artist of this image is Johannes Misset, an advertising illustrator from Haarlem. He was inspired by a pastel by Swiss painter Jean Etienne Liotard called "La serveuse de chocolat" or "La belle chocolatière." This image, which refers to the beneficial effects of chocolate, cannot be used in the United States for legal reasons.
