Douwe Egberts (D.E.)
The rich history of Douwe Egberts began in 1753 when Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thysses opened a "store in colonial goods" in Joure after moving from their hometown of Idskenhuizen. In the store, they sold various products that enriched everyday enjoyment, including groceries, chocolate, and dried fruits.
The business was passed on to their son, Douwe Egberts, and his wife Ymke Jacobs Visser in 1780, whose name the company carries to this day. Douwe Egberts (D.E.) specialized in processing and blending coffee, tea, and tobacco.
Under the leadership of Douwe Egberts, the company expanded beyond Joure, making him not only the namesake but also the founder of the company's expansion. After Douwe Egberts' death in 1806, his second wife, Lysbeth Mintjes, continued the business.
In 1919, Douwe Egberts opened a second location in Utrecht due to its central location in the Netherlands. After ten years, the location had to be expanded, resulting in a move within the city from Catharijnekade to Merwedekade, where the company is still located today.
Douwe Egberts also played a role in nature conservation by being responsible for the planting of the Haulsterbossen. These trees were planted in the late 1940s, and the wood served as a raw material for match production.
After World War II, Douwe Egberts embarked on its international expansion by opening branches in France, Spain, Denmark, and Belgium starting in 1948. With its high-quality products and continuous growth, Douwe Egberts has become a leading name in the coffee industry, both nationally and internationally.
