Round high red tin from Van Melle Vruchten Drops with an image of a ship
Description
This round, high tin packaging is immediately recognizable by its image of sailing ships at full speed over the waves. On the largest ship, the Dutch pennant flutters at the top and the Dutch lion adorns the lower sail. The logo of Van Melle's Confectionary Works is on the middle sail and can also be found on the loose lid.
The story of the red shop tin goes back to the 1920s. The tin packaging at that time was manufactured by Wed. J. Bekkers & Son. It is clear that a lot of thought has gone into creating a visually appealing product.
The red background of the tin forms a striking contrast to the black and gold image of the sailing ships. The 'gothic' letters used contribute to the historic character of the packaging.
This shop tin for Van Melle's Vruchten drops was such a success that it was expanded in the 1930s with yellow and orange variants. Still, the red tin remained the most popular of the three and was produced well into the 1950s.

Van Melle started around 1840 as a bakery in Breskens. Melle started making 'sugar balls' in the mid-19th century. A sweet that his Flemish servant taught him. The balls prove to be extremely popular at a time when candy is an unprecedented luxury for most people. In 1900, Izaak van Melle also started producing them mechanically. Around 1920 Izaak's brother Dirk-Machiel started a factory for biscuits and waffles, including the Mariakaakje.
Internationally, recipes were sought and from 1926 toffees were produced, as well as the fruit caramel and peppermint caramel that was introduced from Poland. These candies are still popular worldwide under the names Fruittella and Mentos.
