Description
This medium-sized extremely decorative vintage tin from Van Melle has a square shape. This tin is equipped with a hinged lid. The tin can be used as a candy, biscuit or storage tin. The decoration of this tin consists of a light background with beige details. On all sides of the tin, we see a drawing of two young playing bears. On the lid, is a colourful image of a mother bear with her two cubs.

The tin is provided with a lock hole at the front. The key is unfortunately no longer present. The lid is attached with two hanging hinges. At the bottom is the brand name 'Van Melle' in the well-known oval logo with graceful letters.

Condition
This vintage tin from Van Melle is in good vintage condition with traces of use and age-related traces of wear. The photos are part of the description.

Van Melle started around 1840 as a bakery in Breskens. It also sold sugar balls. In 1900, Izaak van Melle also started producing them mechanically. Around 1920 Izaak's brother Dirk-Machiel started a factory for biscuits and waffles, including the Mariakaakje.

Internationally, recipes were sought and from 1926 toffees were produced, as well as the fruit caramel and peppermint caramel that was introduced from Poland. These candies are still popular worldwide under the names Fruittella and Mentos.

The company found markets far beyond the borders and in 1935 the first commercial aircraft in the Netherlands, the Double Arend, was purchased. However, on September 11, 1944, Breskens was heavily bombed by the Allies, which also destroyed the factory. Production was restarted in Rotterdam in 1946.
