Description
This rectangular tin from De Gruyter is a valuable piece of the history of this iconic Dutch supermarket chain. The tin has a red edge line and a hinged lid. The scene on the lid shows a 19th-century stagecoach passing an inn or tavern in a village. The sides of the tin depict scenes of birds, sheep, rabbits and geese in the snow. These winter scenes give the tin a pleasant Christmas look.

The vintage tin was used as product packaging for De Gruyter's Thee. The brand is therefore marked on the inside of the lid. The tin was popular among customers because of the high quality of De Gruyter products and the nostalgic look of the tin itself.

De Gruyter was a Dutch supermarket chain founded in 1818 by Johannes de Gruyter in 's-Hertogenbosch. The company grew into one of the largest retailers in the Netherlands and was known for its range of fresh products, including cheese, meats, vegetables and fruit.

De Gruyter's stores were recognizable by their distinctive red facades and were appreciated for their quality and customer service. The company continued to be successful until the 1970s when competition from discounters and supermarket chains began to increase. Finally, De Gruyter was sold to Koninklijke Ahold, the parent company of Albert Heijn, in 1972.

Nowadays, De Gruyter no longer exists as a separate supermarket chain, but the brand is still known and loved by many Dutch people for its nostalgic value and the memories of the time when De Gruyter was still an important player in the Dutch retail industry.

Although De Gruyter no longer exists, it remains an important part of Dutch history and has had a lasting influence on the development of the supermarket sector in the Netherlands.
