HAKA (in full: Handelskamer) was a cooperative trade association from Rotterdam, founded in 1901. The aim of HAKA was to bundle the purchase of goods, so that the members could jointly benefit from more favorable prices and conditions.
HAKA had its own building on the Vierhavensstraat in Rotterdam, designed by the architects J.F. Steel and Leendert van der Vlugt. At the time, the building was very modern and functional, with large windows for plenty of daylight, a concrete construction and a hygienic layout. The building is nowadays seen as an important example of the Nieuwe Bouwen.
After the Second World War, HAKA increasingly focused on the export of Dutch products, such as flower bulbs, cheese and butter. The company continued to grow and also acquired branches abroad. However, in the 1980s HAKA ran into financial problems and in 1992 the company went bankrupt.
Today, the former HAKA building is a national monument and is used as an event location and business center. The building is still an important example of the New Building and is seen as an important cultural heritage of Rotterdam.
