De Gruyter was a Dutch supermarket chain founded in 1818. The chain was one of the largest supermarket chains in the Netherlands and at its peak had almost 500 branches across the country. De Gruyter was best known for its grocery products and was a household name in the Netherlands in the 1950s and 1960s.
De Gruyter was a family business and the chain was known for its own brand products. The shops were recognizable by the red logo with the yellow letters "De Gruyter". The shops had a characteristic appearance, with a large coffee grinder in the shop and boxes with fruit and vegetables.
In the 1970s and 1980s, De Gruyter faced increasing competition from other supermarket chains and the retail landscape in the Netherlands changed. The chain struggled to adapt to the changing market and eventually went bankrupt in 1976.
