Douwe Egberts (or D.E.) is a Dutch company that processes and trades coffee, tea and other foodstuffs. The company was founded in 1753.
Douwe Egberts was created when Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thysses moved from his native village Idskenhuizen to nearby Joure to start a "shop in colonial goods" there on 11 March 1753. Douwes and his wife sold items that 'belong to the pleasures of everyday life', including groceries, chocolate and dried fruits.
In 1780 the company was transferred to son Douwe Egberts (1755-1806) - whose name the company still bears - and his wife Ymke Jacobs Visser. D.E. was engaged in the processing and blending of coffee, tea and tobacco.
Under the leadership of son Douwe Egberts, the company expanded beyond the city limits of Joure. This not only made him the name-giver, but also the founder of the company's expansion. After Egberts' death in 1806, the company was continued by his second wife Lysbeth Mintjes.
Douwe Egberts is responsible for planting the Haulster forests.
After the Second World War, the company began its international expansion by opening branches in France, Spain and Denmark, and from 1948 also in Belgium.
