Description
Very pretty advertisement tin box with Oriental influences. Black rectangular shoe shine box with an elongated base and triangular upright rear with suspension eye. Equipped with a sloping hinged flap lid. Both sides are slightly slanted so that the lid is tilted forward. The decoration of this tin consists of Asian-looking images of a tree with cherry blossom and cranes. In green the text "be smart, use Glim" (translated).
On the sides are lanterns between blossoms with the inscription GLIM. On the inside of the flap lid the remark: "ONLY 'GLIM' articles may be stored IN THIS BOX" (translated).
This shoe shine box can stand independently or be hung on the hanging eye. A beautiful tin made for polishes by the Glimfabrieken, Rotterdam-Overschie.
This tin was made for storing shoe polish items from the company known as NV Glimfabriek, founded in 1918 after a merger between an oil trader in Schiedam and a wholesale trader in laundry detergents and polishing products. It was later purchased by Kon. Zwanenberg Organon and moved to Rotterdam and afterwards to Overschie, before closing in 1970.
The well-known slogan was: ‘Wees Sim gebruik "Glim"’ and this box was used for storing GLIM items only. It was a huge success.

Glimfabriek
The NV Glimfabriek was a factory of polishes in Overschie that existed from 1918-1970.
The company was founded in 1918 from a collaboration between NV Oliefabriek Schiedam, which was founded in 1914, and a wholesaler of detergents and cleaning products. Initially it was located at Korenaarstraat 45-53 in Rotterdam, but the company grew and soon moved to a new complex at Overschieseweg in Overschie. This characteristic building had a square tower on which the word: Glim was written in large letters.
At the height of the company, it employed over a hundred people, but the Glimfabriek was taken over by Koninklijke Zwanenberg Organon and closed in 1970.
The company became known for its slogan: Be smart, use Glim.
