The Victorian era of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was the era of Queen Victoria's reign, which lasted from 1837 to 1901. The period is seen as a time of prosperity in Britain. During this period, an educated middle class emerged in that country. This was due to the benefit of the British Empire's overseas territories, as well as industrial developments within Britain.

Clothing was seen as an expression of women's place in society and was therefore differentiated in terms of social class. Upper-class women, who were not required to work, often wore a tightly laced corset over a bodice or chemisette, pairing them with a skirt adorned with numerous embroidery and embellishments; over layers of petticoats. Middle-class women displayed similar dress styles; however, the decorations were not so extravagant. The layering of these garments makes them very heavy. Corsets were also stiff and limited movement. Although the clothes were not comfortable, the type of fabrics and the many layers worn were a symbol of wealth.
