Biscuit factory Patria in Amsterdam can boast of having introduced the Rijksmuseum to many Dutch families. Many will remember the large tin of biscuits – called “jaws” in some parts of the country – with the image of the Rijksmuseum pressed into the lid, which could be found on many living room tables in the 1950s.
Biscuits, rusks and the well-known crackers were made at Patria. In 1978, the Patria factory on the Haarlemmerweg was in the spotlight throughout the country. The women who worked there campaigned against the closure of the company. They even occupied the factory for a week. Eventually the factory closed. It was demolished in 1981.
