The tjalk is a historic sailing freighter for inland waterways. The name was first used in the 17th century to refer to ships with a round bow. This ship type has many designs.
The tjalk is long, narrow and shallow in construction, like a rounded box. Furthermore, it has a full round bow and round bilges. With a few exceptions, tjalks had one mast. They wore a gaff rig and were equipped with side swords. Tjalks were initially built of wood.
