Description
Porcelain wall plate made in the 1950s. Royal Delft Blue Handicraft. The picture on the sign represents the winter season. This plate is part of a series of four plates with different representations from the four seasons on the farmland.
- Spring: cleaning, washing clothes in a tub
- Summer: bringing in the hay
- Autumn: harvesting apples
- Winter: skating and gathering wood
This porcelain (not earthenware!) plate was produced in Japan and partly decorated in transfer technique, partly in cobalt blue by hand after Dutch illustrations. At Royal Goedewaagen in Gouda, the plates were then covered with quartz (clear lead glaze). The plate represents 1 of the 4 seasons in 19th-century Dutch landscapes. Signed on the back with: "Royal (crown) Japan Delft Blue Handwerk". A very decorative sign for the wall!

This Delft blue hand-painted plate is in a very neat condition with no significant traces of use or age-related traces of wear. Photos are part of the description.

Delft blue is a type of faience (earthenware) with blue decoration, which is traditionally manufactured in Delft. It originated at the end of the 16th century as a cheap alternative to the blue-and-white Chinese porcelain. Delft blue became very popular in a short time and experienced a heyday in the period 1650-1750, when a hundred pottery factories were active in Delft. The industry was wiped out around 1800 by cheaper pottery, especially from England (Staffordshire). Nowadays there is only one factory in Delft that produces 'real' Delft blue, "De Porceleyne Fles". Other types of Delft pottery are the multicolored Boerendelft and the Delft white.
De Porceleyne Fles (since 1919 De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles, internationally known as Royal Delft) is a pottery factory, founded in 1653 in Delft and nowadays also open as a museum. Delft Blue pottery is produced. It is one of the smallest stocks listed on the stock exchange.
