Douwe Egberts originated when Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thysses moved from his native village Idskenhuizen to nearby Joure to start a "shop in colonial goods" on 11 March 1753. Douwes and his wife sold items that 'belong to the pleasures of everyday life, including groceries, chocolate and dried fruits.

In 1780 the company was transferred to son Douwe Egberts (1755-1806) - whose name the company still bears - and his wife Ymke Jacobs Visser. DE was involved in the processing and blending of coffee, tea and tobacco.

Under the leadership of son Douwe Egberts, the company expanded beyond the city limits of Joure. This made him not only the name-giver, but also the founder of the company's expansion. After the death of Egberts in 1806, the company was continued by his second wife Lysbeth Mintjes.

Due to its central location in the Netherlands, a second branch was opened in Utrecht in 1919, which had to be expanded after ten years. Since there was no space locally, the company had to move within the city from the Catharijnekade to the Merwedekade (now: Keulsekade), where it is still located today.
