De Spar is an international chain of supermarkets, founded in 1932 in Zegwaart by Adriaan van Well.
It is usually said that De Spar is an abbreviation of the motto "Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig". According to others, the name "De Spar" was chosen arbitrarily, because the founder Van Well had drawn a spruce tree (spar) on the notes of the founding meeting, or for some other reason, and in that case, the motto was invented by the name, a backronym.
When Spar stores were also opened in Germany, the word "De" was dropped. In some countries, including Italy, the name De Spar has continued to be used.
In German, the name Spar suggests another meaning: Save. Yet the chain uses the same logo with a green circled spruce tree (although such a tree is called 'Tanne' in German). The current logo was designed in 1968 by Raymond Loewy.
Some stores have a liquor store called Le Sapin. That is the French translation of De Spar (Spruce tree).
