Gouda pottery is a collective name for both glossy and matt glazed earthenware, as produced by various pottery factories in Gouda.
Gouda pottery has its origins in Jugendstil and Art Nouveau ceramics from around 1900, which were manufactured by, among others, Plateelbakkerij Rozenburg in The Hague. In the 1920s and 1930s, the pottery industry in Gouda was one of the most important industries with a lot of employment.
Features of Gouda plateel pottery
The decoration of Gouda pottery depends on its origin and changes over the years. However, there are a number of specific and distinguishing features.
Two types of pottery can be distinguished with the Gouda pottery:
- glossy pottery - usually painted in dark colours and finished with lead glaze - was initially produced by Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland;
- matt plateel - subsequently the most important form of Gouda pottery - was developed by Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland as well as by Plateelfabriek De Distel in Amsterdam, which was taken over by Goedewaagen in 1922.
The technique used for Gouda pottery is that of faience. The pottery is first baked in the kiln. This intermediate result is called biscuit. The pottery is then decorated with an "underglaze paint". Then the pottery is fired a second time and the end result is created. During the second firing, the painting fuses with the glaze layer and is thus fired.
