Nostalgia (from Greek: nostos = return and algos = sadness, pain, suffering) is the feeling of having lost something important or dear. This manifests itself in nostalgia for the (personal) past.

Nostalgia was first described in 1678. At that time, in a Basel writing, there was mention of an indefinable longing for the fatherland, which is said to be related to melancholy. The feeling is much like that of homesickness.

Its original meaning, referring to a serious medical condition, has disappeared now that it has become an everyday word. Nostalgia is now associated with memories of a bygone era, the "good old days".

Although nostalgia is no longer a medical condition, some people still experience symptoms such as pain in the chest, throat, or stomach, or feelings of emotional pain.
