The International Eucharistic Congress is a gathering of clergy and laity, first held in 1881, for the purpose of adoring the Holy Eucharist and transubstantiation. For the Catholic Church, the Real Presence of Jesus under the guise of the bread and wine during the Holy Mass is one of the central dogmas. The International Eucharistic Congress was initially set up to celebrate this dogma, but also to propagate it. The motto of the Congresses was Saving Society through the Eucharist. The congresses were the idea of the Frenchwoman Marie-Marthe Emilie Tamisier, who is said to have had a vision in which she was instructed to organize a mass adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

The first congress was organized by Louis Gaston Adrien de Ségur, Bishop of Lille. The first meeting was still small, and hardly international, but the movement of the Eucharistic Congress grew year on year. The sixth congress, that of Paris, in 1888 was already a fairly massive meeting, with the Sacré-Cœur as the meeting place. The Congress of 1890 took place in Antwerp. During the mass near the Meir, Cardinal Petrus Lambertus Goossens, Archbishop of Mechelen blessed a crowd of 150,000 people. The congresses always had the character of large public gatherings, alternating with smaller (scientific) seminars, the proceedings of which were always published after the congress. The Congresses usually last a week. The Eucharistic Congress of 1924 in Amsterdam was a high point in the rich Roman life in the Netherlands.
