A tangram is a Chinese puzzle consisting of 7 pieces, the tans, which together form a square. A large number of figures can be formed with these pieces.
Tangram has its origin in China. The puzzle first reached the Western world in February 1816, when American Captain M. Donnaldson took the game to the United States aboard his ship Trader. Donnaldson himself had been introduced to the game in 1815 when he received a set of Sang-Hsia-koi's Tangram books in Canton. The puzzle quickly gained popularity with The Eighth Book Of Tan, which explored a fictional history of the puzzle. According to The Eighth Book Of Tan, Tangram was invented 4000 years ago by the god Tan. The book also contained 700 figures that should be related to Tangram.
From America, Tangram reached England, and from there the European mainland. In Europe, the puzzle was popularized by two British books: The Fashionable Chinese Puzzle and Key. Tangram was soon exported from China to Europe in large numbers. These Tangram games were made of, among other things, wood, glass, and even turtle shell. Tangram quickly became popular in Denmark around 1818 as a result of the books Mandarinen, written by a student at the University of Copenhagen, and Det nye chinesiske Gaadespil, which contained 339 Tangram figures.
Tangram made its appearance in Germany around 1891 thanks to industrialist Friedrich Adolf Richter.
