Description
Rectangular tin tobacco box depicting the provincial coat of arms of Drenthe and Groningen and the Dutch Lion in relief for 1/4 kg smoking tobacco from Tobacco Factory "The weapon of Drenthe" N.V. Franciscus Lieftinck, Groningen

This tin is fitted with a hinged lid with the text "Verblifa" on the back. The decoration of this tin also consists of the ground colour yellow with orange and blue details. Text on the short sides: N.V. Franciscus Lieftinck, Groningen - Tobacco factory "The coat of arms of Drenthe" Anno 1820

Condition
This tobacco tin from the Lieftinck company is in a good vintage condition with normal traces of use and age-related traces of wear. Photos are part of the description.

Tobacco factory F. Lieftinck Groningen
The tobacco industry, often linked to other 'stimulants' such as coffee and tea, was a flourishing branch of industry in the city of Groningen in the 19th century. An example of such a company is warehouse and former tobacco factory De Nijverheid, situated in a courtyard behind Oosterstraat and built in 1893 to a design by architect J.P. Hazeu.

The client was tobacco manufacturer J. H. Lieftinck. His family came from Drenthe, which explains why his trademark was 'the coat of arms of Drenthe'. Before the realization of this building, Lieftinck also had a tobacco factory on the Raamstraat near the Herepoort. In 1932, the Firma Lieftinck was taken over by competitor Theodorus Niemeijer, after which the company was then called Niemeijer-Lieftinck.
