Abalone is a tactical board game for two players. The hexagonal board used has a total of 61 spaces, with five spaces along each side. The remaining 31 squares are spaced to form rows between the squares on the edges. In the game are fourteen black and fourteen white metal balls (bullets). The players draw lots or choose who is the black and who is the white player. Black starts. The object of the game is to push six of the opponent's bullets off the board with your own bullets.
The French Laurent Lévi and Michel Lalet were the creators of the game Abalone. On January 29, 1988, with the help of financier André Jarno, they set up a company to distribute their game after rejections by several game publishers, but a victory at the Boulogne-Billancourt competition for game designers. Before it was baptized Abalone they called the game Sumito; sometimes the game is described as "sumo with marbles" as it is said to be loosely based on the ancient Japanese form of wrestling. Ten years after its release, 4.5 million copies of the game have been sold in over thirty countries.
The game starts with a starting position. Usually, this is the default formation, but tournaments and advanced players also use one of dozens of alternative starting formations.
