Super mastermind. 'The game of the year'. A competition of wit and logic for two players. Find the secret code.

Description
Usually, Super Master Mind is played using all five holes and eight colours (code bolts). However, simpler game variations are also possible by agreeing in advance on a smaller number of holes and using fewer colours. By means of the table used in the manual, it can be determined how many permutations are possible per number of holes and colours in use. so the players can decide for themselves how difficult, or how easy, their game will be.

Mastermind is a classic among the games in logical thinking. One player tries to unravel the secret code of the other player.

The code maker secretly chooses four code pawns and places them in a chosen order behind the viewing screen. It is allowed to choose two or more pawns of the same colour. The code maker has a choice of six different colours. This is the hidden code that the codebreaker has to unravel.

On his turn, the codebreaker places four code pawns of his choice in the first empty row. Now the code maker with the key pins gives the result:

  • with red/black pins: how many colours are in the correct position?
  • with white pins: how many colours are in the code, but are not in the right position?

With this new information, the codebreaker places four subsequent code pawns in the next empty row.

If the code maker has placed four red/black pins, the code has been cracked. He often also flips the viewing screen, so that the code for the code breaker becomes visible. Now the roles switch. The player who takes the fewest turns to crack the code is the winner of the game.

If both players manage to crack the code in the same number of turns or if both players fail to crack the code, two more rounds may be played to determine the winner of the game.

The game was voted UK Game of the Year in 1973 by the British Toy Traders Association.
