Champ Clark & Lugano
From the year 1920 to about 1970 there was a large cigar factory in the centre of Nieuwe Pekela (Dutch town). The brands that were made were sold far beyond the national borders. The company, initially called Albatros, but renamed Champ Clark/Lugano after World War II, employed many hundreds of people.

Cigar maker used to be a profession with respect. Good cigar makers were labelled as craftsmen.

Around 1970 the existence of Champ Clark / Lugano came to an end. Declining sales weakened market position and wage and cost increases ultimately led to liquidity problems. A few years later, the factory buildings were demolished. The house and the offices remained and, after a renovation, are currently inhabited by two families and four elderly people.
