Description
Large antique/vintage shop counter tin or grocery tin for coffee by H. Smith Koffie from Groningen. Produced around 1930 and in fair to good vintage condition. This tin is equipped with a hinged lid that has a handle at the front. The lid has a chain on the inside, (broken) through which the lid can be opened. The decoration of this tin consists of two surfaces in red and black with gold-coloured details.

On the black lid the text "SMITH's KOFFIE" in light yellow capital letters. The lid has a gold/copper coloured wide rim.

The front and back of the tin is 2/3 red and 1/3 black. Text H.SMITH GRONINGEN with a large gold-coloured coffee bean in between, including the light yellow text COFFEE in the black part.

Both sides have the same division of surfaces with a Royal coat of arms in the red part with the text HOFLEVERANCIER (purveyor to the court) in black below.

The inside and bottom are in a neat condition without rust and/or holes/damages

Condition
This large shop counter tin for coffee by H. Smith from Groningen is in a reasonable vintage condition with traces of use and age-related traces of wear. Chain of the lid broken on the inside. Photos are part of description.

H. Smith Stoom Koffiebranderij en teahandel N.V. Groningen, founded in 1855, was one of the larger coffee and tea companies with a regional market. Smith was fully focused on the three northern provinces, Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe. By 1930 the company was so large that its own trucks operated regular services throughout the area.
