A cookie is a delicacy, baked from dough, eggs, sugar and any other ingredients. The structure is firm, brown in colour and it sometimes contains pieces of candied peel, nuts and raisins. A cookie is not seen as cake, as by the use of cake as a gingerbread.

In the Netherlands, different types of cookies are baked. The diminutive biscuit is used for all kinds of small "pastries" to go with the coffee.

A person who bakes cookies is a baker. However, after the Dutch expression "een rare koekenbakker" (a weird cookies baker), the word cookie baker is usually used metaphorically in the Dutch language, for someone who has not done something so cleverly and is rather clumsily.

"Billenkoek" (a spanking cookie) is not a cookie, but a spanking on someone's buttocks. "Lariekoek" is what someone says but isn't true, just like gossip. "Kletskopjes" (talking heads), on the other hand, are cookies.

Cookies are so popular that the use of the word has been taken to the United Kingdom and to the United States. The English cookie is derived from the Dutch 'Koekie'.
