Description
Vintage biscuit tin from the Belgian brand Biscuit Parein equipped with a hinged lid. The decoration of this tin consists of a yellow background with various images on both the lid and the sides of the famous fairy tale "Hop-on-My-Thumb and the seven-league boots".

The drawings were made by J. Kerckhove in 1948. On the edge of the back of the tin it says: Schuybroek Hoboken Anvers. The bottom and inside are gold coloured. In addition, the bottom is marked in relief with: "Parein".

Condition
This tin is in a vintage / brocante condition and has a beautiful patina. Multiple traces of use and age-related traces of wear. Photos are part of the description.

Parein
In Antwerp, grain merchant Eduard Parein specialized in the import of flour from the USA just after the American Civil War. Ancestor Parein soon became the largest local flower trader. It is also Eduard Parein who acquires the Cordemans biscuit factory in 1890. The Cordemans brand disappears and is replaced in 1895 by the Parein brand. In 1965 a merger took place between Biscuit Parein and Biscuit De Beukelaer, General Biscuits.

Hop-o'-My-Thumb (Hop-on-My-Thumb), or Hop o' My Thumb, also known as Little Thumbling, Little Thumb, or Little Poucet (French: Le petit Poucet), is one of the eight fairytales published by Charles Perrault in Histoires ou Contes du temps passé (1697), now world-renowned. The small boy defeats the ogre. This type of fairytale, in the French oral tradition, is often combined with motifs similar to Hansel and Gretel; one such tale is The Lost Children.

The story was first published in English as Little Poucet in Robert Samber's 1729 translation of Perrault's book, "Histories, or Tales of Past Times". In 1764, the name of the hero was changed to Little Thumb. In 1804, William Godwin, in "Tabart's Collection of Popular Stories for the Nursery", retitled it Hop o' my Thumb, a term that was common in the 16th century, referring to a tiny person.

Hop-o'-My-Thumb (le petit Poucet) is the youngest of seven children in a poor woodcutter's family. His greater wisdom compensates for his smallness of size. When the children are abandoned by their parents, he finds a variety of means to save his life and the lives of his brothers. After being threatened and pursued by an ogre, Poucet steals his magic seven-league boots while the monster is sleeping.

Hop-o'-My-Thumb uses the boots to make a fortune and returns to his family's home, where they live happily ever after.
