Vintage tin by Douwe Egberts for Pickwick tea with boat docking at a coffee and tea house.

  • Manufacturer: Douwe Egberts
  • Date of manufacture: 1937

Description
Rectangular tea tin by Douwe Egberts for Pickwick Tea. Equipped with a hinged slightly bulging lid with a small handle. The decoration of this tin consists of a dark yellow to orange background with the effect of crackle. The lid is decorated with a scene where a boat docks at a coffee house along the river.

The tin box has the same colour background with crackle and a green border added to the top of the tin. This tin stands on four round legs which are placed in a triangle in the edges of the bottom of the tin.

Nowhere on the tin is the D.E. logo, so the origin is not immediately clear to everyone. Of this embodiment, a variant is also known as a coffee tin, but then with a square shape.

Condition
This tin is in a beautiful authentic vintage condition with normal traces of use and age-related traces of wear. Pictures are part of the description

Douwe Egberts
In 1753, Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thijsses opened their grocery store in colonial goods "De Witte Os". On the Midstraat in Joure, they thus lay the foundation for the Douwe Egberts and Pickwick brands. Coffee, tea and tobacco are the most important products.

Pickwick
In 1937 Douwe Egberts introduced Pickwick Tea. An English name was sought because tea was still very "English" at that time and an English stage coach was depicted on the wooden boxes. The wife of the then director was very impressed by the works of Dickens. After reading the "Pickwick Papers", she proposed the name Pickwick.
