DRU is one of the oldest industrial companies in the Netherlands. The company was founded in 1754 in Ulft, the foundry there closed in 1973 and in 2003 the remaining parts of the company moved to Duiven. In 2009 a cultural center called the DRU Cultuurfabriek was established in one of the buildings.

On May 17, 1754, Messrs Bogel, Henning, Count Van den Bergh and his councilor Roukens signed an agreement to erect an iron hut. It was to be one of the first blast furnaces in the Netherlands, but this iron hut did not go so well for years until Bernard Joseph Diepenbrock and his cousins Theodor Johannes and Bernard Johann Reigers appeared on the scene in 1774.

They came from Bocholt where their families enjoyed great prestige. Because they already owned an iron hut in Bocholt, they had experience with the iron casting technique. The three signed a lease and started investing in the cabin. The business went much better and after various lease contracts, in 1831, the Diepenbrock and Reigers families became full owners of the Ulftse hut.

With this the name DRU was also born (Diepenbrock and Reigers in Ulft). DRU now produced everything that could be made from cast iron, from umbrella stands to grave crosses and from pans to stoves.
